The sagebrush in Oregon covers much of this state east of
the Cascades, except high-mountain ranges. Sagebrush, which can be found
from sea level to 11,000 feet, thrives on only 8 inches of precipitation a
year. Native Americans used sagebrush wood for fuel and building, and its
bark for making baskets and bowls. Leaves and seeds were eaten and used
medicinally. Most people think of sagebrush as a relatively short plant.
However, during my wood hunting excursions I have seen them grow well over
10 feet tall with 10" diameter trunks.
